This is weekly e-newsletter on Khmer Rouge Trial. The KRT web portal team had created "Blog" that allow all members can comment it. 1- Co-Investigating Judges Dismiss Ieng Thirith’s Defence Request Phnom Penh: Defence team for former Khmer Rouge Social Action Minister Ieng Thirith’s made a request to exclude evidence obtained by torture, but the Co-investigating Judges dismissed the request, claiming the evidence had never obtained by torture. According to an announcement dated 29 July 2009 by the Extraordinary Chamber in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), the Co-Investigating Judges dismiss a request from Ieng Thirith`s Defence team to exclude any evidence or other material which was or may have been obtained by torture. The Defence request was related both to some specified evidence/materials already included in the case file for Case 002 as well as for any other evidence/material in this category which might be added to the case file in the future… 2- Duch Asks for Toul Sleng Staffer List Phnom Penh: Dismissing a witness who claimed to be a Tuol Sleng staffer during Khmer Rouge regime, former Tuol Sleng prison chief Kaing Guek Eav, alias Duch, asked the Khmer Rouge tribunal again present list of the Tuol Sleng or S-21 security center staffer. The request came in a hearing on 3 August 2009 as former Tuol Sleng child Sek Dorn who claimed to be a medic at Tuol Sleng testified before the special court as witness… 3- Former child medic says S-21 prisoners had torture wounds Latest witness in the trial of S-21 chief Duch claims he treated detainees with 'torn' ears and missing fingernails to allow interrogation. A WITNESS claiming to be a former child medic at Tuol Sleng prison told Cambodia's war crimes court Monday that he treated people with apparent torture wounds, including torn ears and missing fingernails. Sek Dorn, who said he first came to the prison in 1978, said his primary form of treatment involved giving sick detainees "rabbit pellets", a homemade medicine that he said would only keep prisoners alive for a short period of time… 4- A Foreigner Burnt Alive at S-21 Phnom Penh: A witness who testified before the Khmer Rouge tribunal on 5 August 2009 claimed that a foreigner was burnt alive with car tires at S-21 torture center or Tuol Sleng prison ruled by Kaing Guek Eav, alias Duch. Cheam Soeur, 52, who claimed to have worked as guard at S-21 during Democratic Kampuchea (DK), told the Cambodia’s UN-backed tribunal he became the guard at S-21 at the age of 12. He did not get politically educated because of illiteracy… 5- KRT hears of burnt foreigner AFORMER security guard at Tuol Sleng prison told Cambodia's war crimes tribunal on Wednesday that he witnessed a Western prisoner being burned alive inside a pile of car tyres. Chiem Soeu, 52, who was assigned to a guard post outside the S-21 prison, said three guards took the foreign detainee to a street outside the compound, where they made him sit and put his head and body through the tyres… 6- Conference on: Reparations for Victims of the Khmer Rouge Regime Under the Khmer Rouge regime, serious crimes and mass abuses were committed during the years 1975-1979. In 1997, the Cambodian Government requested United Nations’ assistance in establishing a tribunal to prosecute the senior leaders of the Khmer Rouge. The ECCC was officially established in 2003 to try the most responsible members of the leadership of Democratic Kampuchea for the crimes they committed between 1975 and 1979. The Court was eventually set up in 2006 and framed charges against the first five individuals in 2007. It is now in the process of bringing justice to the people of Cambodia after many years of silence… 7- Local Talk Report on Victims and Khmer Rouge Trial” 9 July 2009, Svay Chhrom Village, Svay Chhrom Commune, Svay Rieng Province A local talk on “Victims and Khmer Rouge Trial” is organized by the Open Forum of Cambodia (OFC) in cooperation with Svay Rieng’s Khmer Youth Association on 9 July 2009 at 7:45 a.m. in Svay Chhrom Village, Svay Chhrom Commune, Svay Rieng Province. The Svay Chhum Commune Council Pun Sang is a quest of honor at the discussion ceremony. At the meeting, Poun Sohay, representative of the OFC, invites three speakers including the Svay Chhrum Commune Council, representative of the local people in Svay Chhrum commune and president of Svay Rieng’s Khmer Youth Association, and officer at the OFC to address new information of Khmer Rouge trial web portal… 8- Voice On The Street, Pursat Province, 10 July 2009 Voice On The Street is a program organized by the Open Forum of Cambodia (OFC) aiming to seek impression of the people of Cambodia who experienced the Khmer Rouge regime and to distribute information of Khmer Rouge trial process by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) established by the Government of Cambodia and the United Nations. The program is established to seek the people’s opinions in the provinces/municipalities or the Khmer Rouge victims who have other needs and requests. The program also aims to convey information of the provinces/municipalities’ people to national and international NGOs especially to the Khmer Rouge tribunal through the interviews and texts posted on the Khmer Rouge trial web portal…
