1- Lawyers move for judge’s removal

LAWYERS for former Khmer Rouge head of state Khieu Samphan have not yet filed a motion to remove the international co-investigating judge at the Khmer Rouge tribunal, but saidthey will do so today, following a similar motion filed by defendant Ieng Sary’s lawyers on Friday. So Sovann, Khieu Samphan’s defence lawyer, said the motion against Judge Marcel Lemonde was to be filed on Monday but was delayed by the necessity of translating the document from French into Khmer…

2- Complaint against Marcel Lemonde Increases

Phnom Penh: Khieu Samphan’s co-defence lawyer Sar Sovann told the Rasmei Kampuchea Monday afternoon that he had already made decision to file a complaint to remove Marcel Lemonde’s position as international co-investigating judge at the Khmer Rouge tribunal. “I have already prepared a complaint,” Sar Sovann said. “I will file it to the court this afternoon or tomorrow morning. I sue the co-investigating judge for not respecting professional code. The investigating judge has no rights to instruct investigating official to find only inculpatory evidence. His task is to find both inculpatory and exculpatory evidence.”…

3- Second bias motion planned

So Sovann, defence lawyer for former Khmer Rouge head of state Khieu Samphan, said Sunday that his team planned to file a motion today to dismiss Co-Investigating Judge Marcel Lemonde for bias in the investigation of his client. The move follows a similar motion filed Friday by Michael Karnavas and Ang Udom, defence lawyers for Ieng Sary, former foreign minister under the Khmer Rouge regime, which charged Lemonde with pursuing a “personal agenda” at the tribunal instead of conducting an objective investigation…

4- DC-Cam Distributes DK Books at Chea Sim High School

Takeo: The Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam) distributed 1975-1979 Democratic Kampuchea (DK) books to students at Takeo province’s Chea Sim High School on 8 October 2009 with participations of Kim Kim Ang, deputy director of provincial Department of Education, Youth, and Sports, Khamboly Dy, the author of Democratic Kampuchea, and Vann Thann Pov Dara, DC-Cam deputy director. Pheng Rasy, of a study project on DK history, said 139 DK books were distributed to the secondary and high school throughout Takeo province. Each of the schools received 130 books…

5- KR tribunal summons top officials

SIX senior government officials, including the foreign and finance ministers, have been summoned to appear as witnesses by the Kingdom’s war crimes court in the upcoming case against former Khmer Rouge leaders, according to letters released Wednesday. The letters, each dated September 25 and bearing the signature of International Co-Investigating Judge Marcel Lemonde, request that the officials – Senate President Chea Sim, National Assembly President Heng Samrin, Foreign Minister Hor Namhong, Finance Minister Keat Chhon and two CPP senators – appear at the court to provide testimony “in the framework of the investigation under way against Nuon Chea, Ieng Sary, Khieu Samphan and other leaders”…

6- Duch Named Hang Pin, Instructor Grandfather While in Integration Zone, Svay Chek District: Good Instructor, Relation

The Rasmei Kampuchea just raises Duch’s actions and achievements recognized by educational officials, instructors, students, and Svay Chek villagers where Duch worked as instructor and educational official in 1993-1996. Witness Chou Vin, chief office management of education, youth, and sports in Svay Chek district, testifying for the former instructor Duch trial, told the Rasmei Kampuchea on 3 October 2009 that Hang Pin was the name Kaing Guek Eav, alias Duch, used in late 1993 after 1991 Paris Peace Accord and 1993 UNTAC-organized national election. Hang Pin came to register as instructor at Phkaim, Phkaim commune, Svay Chek district…

7- Key Message for Civil Party Applicants in Case file 002

On 11 September 2009, the Plenary Committee of the ECCC decided to modify the deadline for the submission of Civil Party applications for the current case under investigation by the ECCC (Case 002). The new deadline will be 15 days after notification of the conclusion of the judicial investigation. The Plenary Committee currently expects that the judicial investigation in Case 002 will conclude at the end of 2009…

8- Khmer Rouge victims say they endured forced marriage

THE Victims’ Unit at the Khmer Rouge tribunal last month received civil party application forms from 10 victims who say they were subjected to forced marriage during the regime, according to a press release issued Tuesday by the Cambodian Defenders Project (CDP). The release states that the applications, from victims in Kampong Cham and Pursat provinces, “show striking similarities” to four applications submitted last October by victims in Kampot province…

9- Genocidal Crime Center Built to Commemorate the Dead in Pol Pot Regime

Kampong Thom: A genocidal crime center construction in Democratic Kampuchea (DK) has been completed, costing over $5,000 USD. Mao Laing, chief department of Kampong Thom’s Public Works and Transportation, said that the genocidal crime center was built in Purtiyearam Buddhist monastery, alias Tuol Buddhist monastery, located in Baray commune, Kampong Thom’s Baray district, situated in development center 5 of prime minister Hun Sen for developing all sectors to turn the area into blue area for agricultural work and a field for training human resource to have capacity of small and medium skill so that the people can earn their living…
